Two historic events occurred in 1859. On November 24, 1859 Charles Darwin published his book which has now become famous. Darwin’s book, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life, also has become the basis for attacks on the Word of God from the scientific, educational and political world.

You will notice the full original title of the book, which is not used today because it reveals a racist basis for Darwin’s thought processes.

There is neither time nor space in this short article to refute Darwin’s theory, which has been done so ably by others. However, the logic behind this theory has taken on a life of its own. Before Darwin, the Law of the United States was based upon the Constitution and upon statutes. After Darwin, case law (precedents set by previous court decisions) became the basis for court decisions, indicating an “evolutionary” mindset of the judges.

This change within the legal system is probably the basis for the “modern” liberal thought that our Constitution is “a living document that evolves with the times.” All of these “modern” ideas are not new at all. They represent rebellion against the absolute authority of the Most High God, and have been around for a l-o-n-g time.

Another event occurred September 1, 1859. Amateur astronomers Richard Carrington and Richard Hodgson both noted an extraordinary solar flare. This flare was associated with a coronal mass ejection (CME) that arrived at the earth within hours.

The CME created extremely bright Aurora Borealis or “Northern Lights”, which were visible as far south as Hawaii and Cuba. The auroras were brighter than a full moon. The electromagnetism of the CME caused telegraph operators to receive shocks from their instruments. Many telegraphs would operate without electric power because of the CME.

Recently, Lloyds of London estimated that today, with all our electronic devices and miles of wiring in the power grids, a similar event would cause trillions of dollars in damages.

The Lord in His perfect knowledge knew about the proposed publication of Darwin’s book. The “Carrington Event” happened almost three months before its publication. I strongly suspect that this extremely potent solar phenomenon was the Lord reminding mankind that He is in charge. Perhaps it was a warning not to follow the anti-God theology of Darwin’s theory. With the many natural disasters we witness today, is the Lord still trying to warn us?
