We have all been hearing about the “mysteries” of 2012 and the Mayan calendar ending on December 21st of next year. Actually, the calendar does not end, but “rolls over” and begins again. There have been many books written on this subject. Here is a sampling of titles, the authors and their focus:
This, then, answers the basic question of what are the apocalyptic prophecies regarding the year 2012 all about. They come from spiritualism and the New Age. These do not honor the Lord.
What is interesting about this spotlight on 2012 is the feeling of many Christians that we are in apocalyptic times. The Bible does indeed describe events much like the events ascribed to December 21, 2012 by New Age and spiritualist authors. But the Bible does not give us a date.
Four of the Disciples asked the Lord Jesus “when will the end of the age happen, and what will be the signs?” His answer is found in Matthew 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21. Jesus described wars, earthquakes and famines, and said these would be the beginning of the “birth pains” of the End Times. The figurative picture of a pregnant woman is used throughout the Bible in connection with apocalyptic events or the End Times.
I am told that labor pains start out slowly and increase frequency and in intensity. Today we see an increase in frequency and intensity of earthquakes. This is easily verifiable by government statistics. Storms and natural disasters appear to be increasing also. Insurance companies, who keep very accurate records of the cost of their insured losses, report that their costs are increasing and the losses in the first half of 2011 are greater than all those of 2010. This is like birth pains.
Those who believe the Day of the Lord is near (myself included), not because of the Mayan calendar or New Age predictions, may be justified by such things as current events in the Middle East and the many global natural disasters. This is the time to turn to the Lord and to walk closer to Him and if you have not done so, to ask Him for the free gift of Salvation. The Lord will not force you to do so, but He lovingly desires that you will.
If you have not received this Salvation, contact a Christian friend, contact a Christian church, contact this writer. All of us will be happy to share the Good News with you. The time may be short, and the Truth about the End Times is only found in the Bible.
