Bible Colleges

Some of our most famous and prestigious universities began as Bible colleges. Their original purpose was to train young men to be ministers of God’s Word. These were the first colleges founded in America. Harvard University, Yale University and Princeton University all began as Bible colleges.

According to the “Old South Leaflets”, in 1642 a godly man named Harvard gave one-half of his estate and his entire personal library “towards the erecting of a college”. Mr. Harvard wrote, “Let the main end of every student’s life and studies be to know God and Jesus Christ.” He added, “(this) is the only foundation of all sound knowledge and learning.”

All three universities, Harvard, Yale and Princeton, began their decline toward secularism by allowing their learned “scholars” to question the Word of God. It was institutions like these from which the recent philosophies of Bible myth came. The “doctors of divinity” started by questioning the inerrancy of the Bible. They did not question the existence of God, but doubted His Word.

This was called “modernism”, but there is nothing modern about it. In Apostolic times, there were men who tried to denigrate the Gospel, the work of the Apostles, and later, God’s Word. This “modernism” goes back even further. In the Garden, Satan told Eve that God did not really mean what He said.

Modern, liberal theologians continue to follow the same path. Over fifty years ago, there was a convention of ministers and priests of churches composing the National Council of Churches. A survey taken of these “men of God” found that over eighty percent of them did not believe the Bible was true and that Jesus did not really perform the miracles described in the Gospels.

This is the result of the slippery slope of Biblical modernism and liberalism. We must all carefully examine the doctrines and beliefs that we follow today to ascertain that they do not diminish in any way the wonder, power and glory of the Bible.

The only time today you will hear the Name of our Creator at Harvard, Yale or Princeton is when it is used in vain or when His Perfect Word is denigrated. What miserable men have occupied positions of authority at Harvard University. They have been held in great honor by the world, but how they have dishonored both the name and the intent of Mr. Harvard.

The words of the Lord Jesus to the church at Pergamum –

“But I have a few things against you, because you have there some who hold the teaching of Balaam, who kept teaching Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel.” – Revelation 2:14
