The Great I AM
When the Lord spoke to Moses out of the burning bush, Moses asked His name. The Lord replied, I AM THAT I AM (Exodus 3:14) This name is very descriptive of the Lord. The Lord did not say that He was, He is and He will be. He simply IS.
When the Lord Jesus used that phrase to describe Himself, the Jews knew exactly what He was saying and tried to kill Him on the spot (John 8:58-59).
In addition to that simple statement of who He is, the Gospel of John gives us seven more statements of the Lord Jesus which describe His characteristics. Because seven is the number of completion, these seven characteristics given by Jesus must be a complete description of His nature. Clearly, the emphasis is mine.
- And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to Me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on Me shall never thirst. John 6:35
- Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12
- I am the door: by Me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. John 10:9
- I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth His life for the sheep. John 10:11
- Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. John 11:25
- Jesus saith unto him,I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me. John 14:6
- I am the true vine, and My Father is the husbandman. John 15:1
How wonderful it is to have such a Savior! Praise the name of Jesus always! How I look forward to His calling us Home!
