Nahum and the Assyrian

The Book of Nahum is ostensibly about Nineveh. This is declared in the very first verse. Nineveh is named only three times in Nahum, but Nineveh represents Assyria and the Assyrian. The Book of Nahum is really about the Assyrian. The Assyrian is named thirteen times in the Old Testament. In the Bible, thirteen represents rebellion. The Assyrian is a rebel, and represents both kings and kingdoms that rebel against the Lord, and a spiritual rebel.

Ezekiel chapter thirty-one describes a being called “the Assyrian.” This powerful being is metaphorically described as a mighty cedar tree (Ezekiel 31:3). This being, which I believe to be Satan, is exalted above all the other “trees” (Ezekiel 31:5), and all the other “trees” in the Garden of God envied him (Ezekiel 31:9). Satan was the most beautiful and powerful of all the Lord’s created beings (Ezekiel 28:13-15). And his pride became his undoing.

The king of Assyria was used by the Lord as His rod of punishment against the northern Kingdom of Israel (Isaiah 10:5). It was an Assyrian king that came against the southern Kingdom of Judah, and was supernaturally defeated when he awoke in the morning to find that 185,000 of his soldiers were dead (II Kings 19:35). This Assyrian king became a prophetic picture of the defeat of a future “Assyrian” who will attempt to conquer Jerusalem and will be supernaturally defeated (Revelation 19:17-21).

It was the Assyrians that defeated the Kingdom of Israel and deported the ten northern tribes to all parts of the Assyrian Empire. This is the basis for the concept of the “Ten Lost Tribes of Israel.” This is incorrect because many of the northern Israelites moved to the Kingdom of Judah in order to worship the Lord and not the golden calf. If some of the tribes were lost, then why does James address his book to the “twelve tribes” of Israel (James 1:1)?

While much of the Book of Nahum is condemnation of Nineveh as a type of the future enemies of Israel, there is also condemnation of a harlot who sells nations by her whoredoms (Nahum 3:4). This is Mystery Babylon, the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth (Revelation 17:5).

There are three segments of Mystery Babylon and they are found throughout the Bible. They are Spiritual (Nahum 1:14), Political (Nahum 2:3-5) and Commercial Babylon (Nahum 3:16). We see these today. Political Babylon is big government that wishes to tell us when we can assemble and what we can say. Commercial Babylon are the huge corporations that have usurped local businesses and then promote philosophies, such as social justice, which have no relation to their stated business. Spiritual Babylon is the worship of the earth, and tells us that we must reduce our use of fuel and our consumption of food to save the climate and the earth. In fact, the three segments have melded together as a force to usher in the prophesied world under the control of one all-powerful entity, the person or entity that we refer to as the “anti-Christ.” This is the goal of Mystery Babylon.

The prophecy of Nahum is about the coming day of the Lord’s wrath and the coming Millennium. Much of the language is reminiscent of the Revelation (Nahum 1:5-6). The final verses of Nahum describe the conclusion of the Nineveh/Assyria/enemies of Israel. Their leaders will slumber and die. Their people will be scattered. Their wound will be fatal and will never heal (Nahum 3:18-19).

The Lord will be victorious! Praise His name forever!
